Biography
Kevin is an assistant professor of theatre and head of performance at Susquehanna University, where he teaches classes in acting, directing, dramatic literature, and American theatre history. At Susquehanna University he has directed Sarah Ruhl's Eurydice, the national premiere of Ethel Smyth’s opera Fête Galante, Gian Francesco Malipiero’s opera The False Harlequin, Peter Shaffer’s Equus, Yasmina Reza's Art and the musical Spring Awakening.
He holds a doctorate in theatre history, theory and criticism from the University of Colorado Boulder, where he received the GPTI Teaching Excellence Award. Kevin also holds an MFA in directing and an additional masters in playwriting and lighting design.
Kevin hails from New York and has worked as a director, actor, playwright, stage manager, and lighting designer in Off-Broadway, regional, and university theaters across the country for over forty years. He is a founding member of the Twilight Stage Company, was the resident stage manager for T. Schreiber Studios, associate artistic director of Theatre Off-Park, and an assistant at Jim Henson’s Muppet Workshop. Kevin served on board of directors and as treasurer of the Bas Bleu Theatre in Fort Collins, Colorado where he acted and directed for several years.
His full-length play, Unspoken, was the winner of the University of Colorado Boulder’s New Play Festival and was produced by the department of Theatre & Dance in 2017.
Kevin is also an award-winning photographer specializing in theatrical photography and headshots.
“As an artistic collaborator, Kevin is brilliant, both in regards to the quality of the produced work (I have worked with him functioning as a stage lighting designer and director on three productions) and in collegiality of approach. He brings a wealth of pertinent and useful design dramaturgy to the table and has a talent for negotiation and a team mentality in the technical production sphere. His direction is skillful and he always holds the educational component of academic production – the interest of the students involved - in the highest regard. The end results are visually arresting - witness his artful rendition of Metamorphoses on our Mainstage, and his evocative lighting for East Meets West in our black box theatre– and are beautifully married to the root texts being produced."
-Bruce Bergner, MFA, Chair of Theatre & Dance, University of Colorado Boulder
“The most creative and imaginative director I have ever worked with.”
-Leandro Ramos, Actor
"Dr. Crowe has done so much to uplift the department and its students. In addition to his tremendous work to create our new BFA program, Dr. Crowe has elevated the department’s output and image to a higher standard. In many small ways, from program design to recruiting strategies, Dr. Crowe’s insights have helped us to polish and modernize our theater company’s operations. Additionally, by trusting students with challenging material and modeling professionalism in theater, he has inspired the student body to achieve excellence. Every day I hear students discussing the materials from his class, or leading one of his warmups for each other, completely of their own initiative. Dr. Crowe leads by example, and I believe that his influence has had a major hand in improving the visibility and public opinion of our department ... He is one of the best directors and teachers I have ever worked with, and I think any other educator or theater maker would feel the same."
- Callie Lythgoe, MFA, Lecturer in Costumes, Costume Designer, Susquehanna University
“If I have to get on my hands and knees and beg you to see The Little Dog Laughed, I will do it. …The show really manages to work as a cohesive piece…I cannot recommend this show enough. It tickled my funny bone and touched my heart. If nothing else, it will inspire a need to purchase a dozen leather jackets... Please, if you do nothing else this weekend, go see The Little Dog Laughed.”
-Lucille Wright, Review, Onstage Colorado
“Unlike some very creative individuals I have encountered in my career, Mr. Crowe has the organizational ability and discipline to fully realize his creative projects. His most recent production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a case in point . . . the production was successfully realized in a magnificent performance which showed Mr. Crowe’s careful work in unifying all the elements: technical, design, and acting.”
-Charles R. Myers, PhD, Reviewer, North Coast Journal
"Our mainstage productions have increased significantly in professionalism, artistic depth, and audience engagement since he began directing for our company.... In addition to his accomplishments and successful teaching, Dr. Crowe models a top-quality professional attitude, indomitable good cheer, and a dedicated approach to his art. We are better for having Dr. Crowe on our faculty."
-Erik Viker, Professor and Head of Theatre, Susquehanna University
“He is the best directing major we produced in my many years as department chair. The best of some twenty-five stage directors, several of whom are working professionally in NY and LA.”
-Sanford Sternlicht, Professor Emeritus of Theatre, SUNY Oswego
“His direction of Metamorphoses was remarkably theatrical and imaginative but at the same very faithful to the text. It is evident that Kevin has done the “work” by digging into the script to
discover the inner workings of what makes the story tick, but then he allows his imagination to roam free to an original vision. I still recall one memorable moment in the production of Metamorphoses when Eros, naked except for his blindfold and wings, extended his hand to Psyche in an act of love. This moment represents the essence of simple storytelling, yet so beautiful.”
-Cecilia Pang, Ph.D, Associate Professor, University of Colorado Boulder
"Kevin possesses a unique artistic vision and creative ability that results in exciting and innovative theatrical events.”
-Bernadette Cheyne, Professor, Chair of Theatre, Film & Dance, Humboldt State University
“In the work (Spring Awakening) he showed an insightful understanding of the script and a strong visual sense for illuminating the text in his work with the actors and designers.”
-Mark Cole, Assistant Professor of Theatre, Theatre Department, SUNY Oswego
"Kevin was to supply me with one of the most satisfying collaborations in my time at CU Boulder. Kevin came to us already having an MFA in directing (as well as a master’s degree in lighting design!), and when he directed Mary Zimmerman’s Metamorphoses, I signed on as a voice and speech coach. Not only did I enjoy working with the excellent student cast, also I was able to closely observe Kevin’s highly effective approach to directing and his ability to sensitively work collaboratively with young actors.”
-Lynn W. Nichols, PhD, Instructor (Retired), University of Colorado Boulder
“I served as Kevin’s advisor for his Level II production of The American Dream. His research and presentation to me were so thorough and thoughtful, that had I been an artistic director of a theatre, I would have readily hired him to direct the play.”
-Margaret Kelso, Associate Professor, Theatre, Film & Dance, Humboldt State University
"His thirst for knowledge in the field of technical theatre has been a joy to witness and cultivate over the past two years, however, it has been his attention to the needs of the production as a whole artistic expression that has solidified his position as a true Theatre Artist.”
-Bruce Keller, Professor, Technical Director, Portland State University
"His performances exhibited a keen sensibility and first-rate talent. He was a joy to work with. I also had opportunity to view his other acting and design work in subsequent productions, and with each, Kevin's work was outstanding. He added immeasurably to the depth of the Theater Arts graduate program while he attended PSU.”
- Karin Magaldi, Associate Professor, Theater Arts, Portland State University
“I went to see Metamorphoses last night and we're still reeling from the experience. It was unquestionably one of the most profound, powerful, and beautiful (in every sense of that word) night of theatre I've ever experienced."

“In my opinion, if we have one graduate student who deserves financial and academic recognition it is Kevin Crowe. His work in production and class is consistently superb. We are fortunate to have Kevin here as a student.”
- John Heckel, Professor, Department of Theatre, Film & Dance, Humboldt State University
“What a transformative experience that was! Pageant, drama, ceremony, slapstick and damned good theater. I was in tears all night, both in joy and sorrow. It must have been an amazing experience to be part of making this happen.”
-Patrick Mason, Vocal Coach
“I was able to catch last Wednesday night's performance of Metamorphoses. Although it has been a little while since I have seen a show and I was very anxious to see a production, this was utterly BEAUTIFUL and SPECTACULAR!! Everything about it was perfect--the set (obviously, including the pool!!), the "rope", the choreography, the stories, the acting, even the little singing!! What a magnificent event!! That should be nominated and WIN every conceivable award there is, or there is NO justice in the world today! I wish it could have gone on forever (or at least last all night!).”
